hrtWorld Heart Day is celebrated on 29 September every year and is a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD).This World Heart Day, the focus is on creating heart-healthy environments. By ensuring that people are able to make heart-healthy choices wherever they live, work and play,World Heart Day encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us.

History of World Heart Day

Since 2000, the World Heart Federation has made efforts to spread awareness about the significance of this day. World Heart Day was celebrated each year on the last Sunday of September from the year it was established till 2010. From the year 2011, it was celebrated every year on 29th of September (ie not on the last Sunday of the month).

Why Celebrate World Heart Day?

World heart day is celebrated all across the world to reduce the number of deaths because of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. The following are the major reasons why people recognize this day globally:

  1. This international campaign aims to spread awareness among common public to motivate them to live with a healthy heart
  2. It is an effective way to make people around the globe aware that heart ailments are the leading cause of death. (World Heart Federation, in collaboration with the WHO, spreads important news about heart diseases and main risk factors to the public worldwide).
  3. It motivates people to participate and gain knowledge, undergo proper heart check-ups, and follow other control measures all through their lives.
  4. It helps to achieve the purpose of improving global heart health by encouraging people to make lifestyle changes and gain knowledge about ways to build a healthy

Sudden Cardiac Death Statistics in India

Presently, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. In the early 2000s, roughly 17 million people worldwide died from cardiovascular diseases annually.

Dr. Balbir Singh, one of the leading interventional cardiologists in Indraprastha, Apollo Hospital, India, has exhorted the Indian population to beware of the dangers of Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCA) that can lead to death of an individual within a few minutes. As per WHO census statistics mortality due to cardiac causes has overtaken mortality due to all cancers put together. Approximately 4280 out of every one lakh people die every year from SCA in India alone.

Furthermore, the World Heart Federation says that “Whether your environment is urban or rural, this is our chance to transform our neighborhoods into heart-healthy environments so that we can achieve a 25% reduction in premature death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 2025.
